Southern Gospel Music Highlights Memorial Service for Tim Burrows

A memorial service for Timothy “Tim” Michael Burrows, 47, of Chesnee, SC, was held at Faith Temple on Thurs., Nov. 14. The loving husband of Tammie Gillespie Burrows, Tim went to be with his Savior, Thurs., Nov. 7, 2024, at The Medical Univ. of SC in Charleston after a liver  transplant, complicated by spinal cord injuries during surgery.

His daughter, Ashley Burrows (Orchestra Teacher at Boiling Springs Middle School) of Chesnee, and son, Brandon Burrows (Firefighter at Pelham-Batesville Fire Dept. and a volunteer at Cherokee Creek Fire Dept.) of Chesnee, are the couple’s children. Mrs. Tammie Burrows teaches orchestra at Chesnee High School.

Born Aug. 8, 1977, in Florence, Tim was the only child of Rev. Raymond D. Burrows (Ann) and the late Victoria Fitch Burrows. Tim was a former Consultant with Bryan T. Smith Law Firm and Video Production Editor for Vogel Production; he had worked in printing for Southeastern Printing and Greenville Office Supply. He attended Faith Temple. Tim enjoyed Southern Gospel music and sang with his family’s group: Faithful For. He also sang with the Redeemers of Faith Quartet. His best friend was Joe Trusty, a singer.

The family received friends (4:30 - 6:30 p.m.) before “A Celebration of Life” followed with the Rev. Joey Mills officiating and many Southern Gospel Group friends of Tim participating.

At the service, one singer intoned, “They’ll lay this body in the ground, but that’s not where I’ll be.” One sang, “Where could I go, but to the Lord.” Someone sang “Celebrate Me Home” and “Oh, I want to see Him.” The message seemed to be this: Tim has gone home and has no more sadness.

Daughter Ashley sang several songs. “He was the best dad in the world,” she said.

The Rev. Joey Mills said, “Tim asked me to preach at his home-going service… I’m here to honor my friend… He told me to ‘shuck the corn.’ … He was my friend, and I loved him.” Pastor Mills preached, gave an altar call (because Tim wanted it), and seven people responded.

Ashley sang “Amazing Grace” and her mother played it on her violin. They blended voices on “I’m Free.” Ashley sang “He’s Alive,” a Resurrection song.

Tammie, who plans to continue the family’s singing ministry, introduced the last song, a recording of Tim singing “The Lighthouse.” We listened to the lyrics — “I thank God for the Lighthouse. I owe my life to Him… If it wasn’t for the Lighthouse, where would this ship be?” The powerful recording filled the building. Many folk lingered, hesitant to leave the emotional and joyous celebration.

A private burial was held 11:00 a.m., Fri., Nov. 15, in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Ashley, Brandon, and the Cherokee Creek Fire Dept.
