Ms. ALLINE AMOS EULOGIZED
Mrs. Alline Christine Splawn Amos, 96, wife of the late Mr. Ralph Amos, died Aug. 28, 2024. A Chesnee native, she was a retired seamstress and homemaker, who loved making and sharing quilts and ornaments. A Faith Temple member, she loved Bible study.
She is survived by 4 daughters: Carolyn Mann (Frank), Norma Switzer (Earl), Christine Heisey (Mike); and Mary Ivester (Daniel); two sons, Johnny Amos (Juanita) and Raymond Amos (Aline); 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Amos was predeceased by a son, Phillip Amos, a grandson, Chad Amos, and a sister, Pauline Atkins.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Sat., Aug. 31, 2024, at Faith Temple. Burial followed in Springhill Memorial Gardens, Chesnee.
At the funeral, Pastor Raymond D. Burrows read Psalm 23 and prayed. Mrs. Ann Burrows, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Sherry Outlaw, sang “The Lighthouse” and “In the Sweet Bye and Bye.”
Dr. Frank Mann, Carolyn’s husband, wore a flat-top “newsboy hat.” He spoke, saying, “Do not tell a mother-in-law joke in my presence. I loved my mother-in-law, and she loved me. How many of you want to know why I’m wearing this hat?” He said humorously that his Ms. Amos gave him $10 for his birthday. He told her the $10 gift bought him that hat. She said, “Don’t you tell anybody I gave you that hat.”
Dr. Mann prayed, “Father, I thank you so much for the life of this lady… for the blessings we received by knowing her. Take her into your fold, where… she doesn’t have to take pills, her body’s not stiff, she’s in your presence.”
Pastor Burrows quoted Psalm 119:15: “Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Sister Alline had made the Lord her Savior, he said. “About 12 years ago, Ms. Alline came into our fellowship [Faith Temple].” (After her husband passed, Ms. Amos needed to attend a church nearer home.) Pastor said, “If she missed church, it was because of something critical… She attended Tues. Bible Study and had such a working knowledge of the Bible.”
Pastor said Ms. Amos’ life related to three Bible ladies: (1) She was like Dorcas. Ms. Amos had a giving heart, made Christmas ornaments and cooked dishes for friends. She was full of “good works and almsdeeds.” (2) Ms. Amos was like the mother who prepared lunch for the lad with the 5-loaves-and-2-fishes Jesus used. To her family, Ms. Amos said, “I want to see you all in heaven.” Pastor referred to Romans 10:9-10, urging family members to make sure “all is well. (3) Ms. Amos was like Mary, sister to Martha. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet. “The Lord congratulated Mary for that mindset. Ms. Alline was like that. She couldn’t get enough of the Bible,” Pastor said. “‘Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.’ In my estimation, Ms. Alline was among the greatest — a godly, wonderful lady. She invested her life in her family… that may be the world’s greatest ministry, and, in turn, you — the family — invested in her,” Pastor said. He praised Ms. Amos’ daughters who, during her waning years, kept her in their homes. He mentioned Mr. Morgan Clardy Cowan, who helped Ms. Amos, and Mrs. Sherry Breazeale Outlaw, who called Ms. Amos ‘Mom.’ Pastor said Ms. Amos always asked him about his son, Tim.
“It has been a sincere pleasure and privilege to serve Ms. Alline through the years,” Pastor said. “She made a definite mark on my life, and I thank her for it.”
