Mr. T.G. JONES' BODY LAID TO REST
The body of Mr. T.G. Jones, 76, was laid to rest on Sun., May 19, 2024, after he passed on May 15. Many gathered at 3:00 p.m. at Faith Temple, Taylors, SC, to honor Mr. Jones, a church member and retired employee of Greenville Memorial Hospital. His late wife Mrs. Shirley Smith Jones died in 2006. His mother, Ms. Elizabeth, passed in 2010.
Mrs. Ann Burrows and Mr. Tony McCall gave tributes; Pastor Raymond D. Burrows delivered the eulogy; Mrs. Sandra Martin played the piano; and a trio sang “Precious Memories.” Pall bearers included Michael Campbell, Danny Phillips,, John Miller, Perry Yoder, Tony McCall, and Carroll Peterson. Burial followed in Wood Memorial Park.
Pastor Burrows described Taylor Greenberry Jones as a gentle man who was always happy, saw the good in others, had a friendly disposition, and never seemed to let life affect him negatively.
“Someone asked me to see him,” Pastor said of their meeting in April 2000 when T.G. faced open heart surgery. Pastor asked him if he was a Christian. T.G. said, “No.” Pastor then led him in a prayer to receive Christ.
T.G. attended Faith Temple and often “talked back” to Pastor Burrows as he preached, saying, “That’s right; preach it, etc.” T.G. sold his home and went to live at Pine Grove Senior Living. There, he roamed the halls and made friends. Pastor called T.G. “the Mayor” and joked that he was out in the hallways “politicking.” T.G. would ask Pastor, “How’s your son [Tim]?” Pastor said T.G. found a “lady friend” in Ms. Karen Robinson who lived at Pine Grove Senior Living. “She’s beautiful, Brother Burrows,” T.G. told Pastor. Ms. Karen’s daughter and son-in-law accompanied her to the funeral.
T.G. frequented Ryans (now closed) restaurant and then “the folks at the Clock became part of his family,” Pastor said. “Mr. Arthur [Arthur Chulkas, senior owner of the Clock] would ask me, ‘How’s Jones doing?’” The Clock sent flowers and some employees attended the funeral. (Aside from a distant nephew, T.G. had no known living relatives.)
“When T.G. worked at Homelite, they called him ‘Chief,’” Pastor said, adding that T.G. had broken his back 4 times. “In spite of hardships life threw at him, he had an optimistic mindset. He made a lasting mark on me. One of these days, we’ll see each other again.”
Pastor read, “Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing” (2 Tim. 4:8).
