Mary Bearden
The Faith Temple Church building, Taylors, SC, sits on land donated by Ms. Mary Collins Bearden. “The Mary Bearden Class” (Sunday School) is named in her honor.
The late Pastor James H. “Jimmy” Thompson, founding pastor of Faith Temple, would drive to Ms. Bearden's house, located on what is now Faith Temple’s cemetery property, and bring her to church. She attended Faith Temple from the time the original church building was dedicated on Dec. 15, 1957, exactly one year after the church was organized, until her death.
Ms. Mary Collins Bearden (1878-1962) married Edward Eugene Bearden (1885-1937), a livestock dealer and farmer who died at age 51. She died on her birthday, Aug. 24, at age 84. Their remains are buried at Double Springs Baptist Church.
The late Mrs. Nell Thompson Adams Montgomery was Pastor Jimmy Thompson’s sister and my first-grade school teacher.
Mrs. Nell said, “Ms. Bearden lived in a two-story house on Hwy. 290. When there were plans to build Faith Temple, seven pieces of land were offered. Our dad [Mr. Lawrence Thompson] went to see Ms. Bearden and asked her about giving her land. She said, ‘Yes, she would.’ We were happy. While Ms. Bearden sat with Momma and me at Faith Temple, and Hope, my daughter, was a baby, Ms. Bearden said, ‘Well, you didn’t have to get such a pretty one.’ A Sunday School class — I think it was Boyce Lord’s class — put a flower on Ms. Bearden’s grave every Christmas.”
