Cold rain forced a planned graveside service for Mr. Robert Anthony Roye, 55, to be held inside at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2024, at Faith Temple, 5080 Sandy Flat Rd., Taylors, SC 29687.

Born on Jan. 16, 1969, in Alameda, California, Robert “Robby” Anthony Roye was the son of Jimmy Hayes Roye and Nancy Joyce Rainey Roye Yoder. Mr. Perry Yoder, a retired Army veteran and Joyce’s husband, served many years as stepfather to Robert, who passed on Tues., Feb. 20, 2024. Robert lived with the Yoders in Marietta, SC. He graduated from Kaiserslautern High School, Germany in May 1987. He was a Boy Scout (Explorer), participated in high school Air Force ROTC, and played baseball, football, basketball. He bowled and worked at Bojangle’s (1993-2017), including two years as a roving manager. Robert’s best friend was Ricky Ashmore. They enjoyed Trivia contests at Applebee’s and other establishments. Robert’s grandparents were Spillman and Mildred Roye and Belton and Grace Rainey.

Perry and Joyce Yoder greeted family members in the church sanctuary before the funeral. Mrs. Margaret Barnett Upton Rainey and her husband, as well as Perry’s sister, Mrs. Karen Yoder English from Georgia, attended. Other family members and friends also attended.

Pastor Raymond D. Burrows asked gatherers to stand as the family entered for the service. The casket, covered with lovely flowers, was placed in front of the pulpit. “Your presence meets with much appreciation,” Pastor said to attendees. “These are the words of King David,” he said, reading Psalm 23 before praying. Mrs. Ann Burrows led and Mrs. Sandra Martin played the piano as the congregation sang, “I’ll Fly Away.”

Mr. Tony McCall said, “It’s hard to lose a son.” Tony visited Robert Roye while he recently was hospitalized. “We know were he is. He’s with Jesus… ‘He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds’ (Psa. 147:3)… ‘And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away’ (Rev. 21:4)… We love you. God will heal your pain.”

Mrs. Ann Burrows sang a version of “Jesus Loves Me.” “The chorus of this song is the first song Robert ever learned,” she said.

Pastor expressed thanks from the Yoders for support from the church and from the hospital staff. He told of visiting Robert in the hospital and asking about his spiritual standing. Robert said all was well between him and the Lord. “We’ll be reunited, according to the Bible,” Pastor said, addressing the Yoders, “Both of you are greatly loved by this church family.” He mentioned Pastor Donnie and Mrs. Dana O’Shields of Living Branch Church who attended the funeral. The Yoders work on Saturdays in Living Branch’s food bank. “A three-fold cord is not quickly broken,” Pastor said, talking of comfort of being linked to other people. “‘By this shall all men know that you are my [Jesus’s] disciples if you love one another.’ I cannot relate completely, never having lost a child — but our Savior can. Mr. Robby is in the eternal presence of God.” Pastor prayed, “Bless these dear ones who have assembled… I praise you for that labor of love, in the Name of Jesus, amen.”

Pall bearers Carroll Peterson, Danny Phillips, Jerry Martin, Tony McCall, and men from the Travelers Rest Funeral Home conveyed the bier to the cemetery. In Fleming Hall, ladies of the church, headed by Mrs. Amanda Campbell, served a meal for the Yoders and their family and friends.
