'Let Jesus Shine through Us,' Says Martin

Jerry Martin

“We’re all wired a little bit differently,” Mr. Jerry Martin said, speaking at a Brotherhood meeting on Sat., March 2, 2024, at Faith Temple, Taylors, SC.

“Nobody is a cookie-cutter type Christian,” he said. “We’re not all the same. My oddity is I really want to believe what I hear; I need to know it’s true… I’m a little standoffish in the beginning. I’ve seen too many people — I’ve done it myself — just grab something and run with it, only to find out it might not be true, might not be what the Lord had in mind for me… Once I know I can believe it, I believe it. But I want to know who I’m hearing it from is credible.”

Martin told of stopping at a rest stop on I-26 and seeing a man with a “personal PA system” he was wearing. The man was witnessing loudly for the Lord, saying things such as, “Friend, do you know Jesus?”

“Just blasting everybody out,” Martin said. “He was a little obnoxious. Good message, but I question the delivery… He was actually doing a work for the Lord, talking with people, maybe getting some people saved. And that’s wonderful. And I’m not doing anything — just going to the restroom.”

Referring to the WWJD? (“What Would Jesus Do?”) bracelets people wore a few years ago, Martin wondered if Jesus would use a PA system at a rest-stop on Hwy. I-26?

“I don’t think so,” Martin said. “I got to thinking about everything I have read in Scripture about when Jesus spoke with someone. Now, if he was speaking with the Pharisees and Sadducees and the people who made it difficult for us average folks to find God… they had so many rules and regulations, stuff, that it was pretty miserable. But when he spoke to somebody who had a need, who was down, out, beaten, trampled down, when he spoke to the woman taken in adultery, he said, ‘I don’t condemn you. Go, and sin no more’… When he spoke to the people who sought him with a need, his words were kind. He didn’t beat anybody over the head. He didn’t embarrass people. He didn’t humiliate anybody… just love, acceptance, compassion on people… because life had already beaten them down, but he offered a hand up and understanding and compassion. But, on the other side of that coin, when he talked to the Pharisees and the Sadducees, he ‘broke bones.’ His words were pretty harsh — he called them ‘liars’ and other descriptive words.”

Martin added, “Going back to the guy with the megaphone [at the rest stop], I actually say, ‘Lord, bless him for what he’s doing… Rock on! I’m glad I’m not called to be that guy. I’m not sure I could do that.”

Jesus was accused of eating with sinners and publicans, Martin said. They were comfortable with Jesus because he showed compassion.

Mr. Millard Robertson and Mr. Anthony Robertson served a great breakfast before Martin spoke. Brotherhood  meetings are held in Fleming Hall at 8:30-10:30 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month. All men are invited.
