I Know This to be True – by Jerry Martin

I am so glad that God, in His time and wisdom, helps us to change how we think!

Think about it; do you like the same food, entertainments, activities, or music that you did when you were 25? Do you still run with the same crowd that you did back then? I would guess some of these things have changed for you. I certainly know they changed for me.

I grew up listening to the Rock & Roll music of the 1960s and 1970s. I preferred music that had a driving beat, whether the lyrics had any meaning at all or not. (They usually didn’t!)

After being introduced to Christ and trying to learn to like spiritual music, here again, I needed a beat in order to like it. Songs from the traditional church hymnals were boring (you know the old “red-backed hymnal”). They would put me to sleep!

Well, now, I have learned to listen closely to the words of those old songs, beat or no beat, and try to feel what the songwriter was trying to say. This is a huge difference from what I used to prefer.

I find that some of those old-time people had a true experience and close, intimate walk with the Lord. I have come to truly appreciate and admire those “saints of old” and love to listen to their testimonies in song; they had a relationship with God. I want to be like that.

“Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul” (Psalm 66:16).
