HOW WELL DO WE KNOW THE BIBLE?

There’s a plague of Bible illiteracy in our country … but how well do church folk know the Bible?

Not well, says One Accord Resources (OAR), the group from which Faith Temple purchases Sunday school books.

OAR says this lack of Bible knowledge has come from churches moving away from planned and balanced curriculum.

“Not that long ago, nearly every church used Bible curriculum each week in their small group gatherings,” OAR says. “The advantage to this approach is what we call ‘scope and sequence.’ Scope and sequence refers to the well-planned and balanced diet of God’s Word.”

You may recall the 2012 news story about a 17-year-old girl who collapsed at work with a swollen tongue, says thegospelcoalition.org. “Turns out she’d eaten almost nothing but McDonald’s chicken nuggets her entire life. No fruits. No vegetables. Just deep-fried chicken. She learned it the hard way: man doesn’t live by breaded nuggets alone.”

Churches often hear messages on select topics, but OAR Sunday school lessons are planned years in advance with careful attention to detail. Planning assures that each student in a Sunday school using OAR material “will receive a balanced and thorough diet of God’s Word.”

Some people may feel they don’t need Sunday school. Its name sounds childish. But we adults forget parts of the Bible if we don’t hear all parts. A Biblical worldview frames your decisions and perspectives.

COVID-19 hurt Faith Temple (FT) Sunday school attendance. We now meet as one class in the church sanctuary. The intimacy found in various small Sunday school classes was lost. But the Bible IS being taught during FT’s Sunday school time by good teachers. Mr. Don Lollis, Ms. Beatrice Whitman, Mr. Michael Campbell, Mr. Jerry Martin, and Mr. Tony McCall each, in turn, take a Sunday to deliver the Word in the auditorium class.

Those teachers presented recent lessons on “The Sanctity of Human Life,” “Pornography Is Destructive,” “The Bible on Homosexuality,” and “Discerning the Messages of Media” — important topics for today!

Sunday school is for all ages. Right now, we don’t have provision for Sunday school for children. Ms. Cindy McCall and her helpers hold class for children during our regular church service. Perhaps someday we can provide Sunday school classes for children. For now, however, the auditorium class is great for all ages.

Sunday school starts on Sundays at 9:45 a.m. and ends at 10:15 a.m. You can learn a lot in 30 minutes. FT worship service begins at 10:30 a.m., but church really starts at 9:45! Please join us at 9:45 a.m. and enjoy learning more of the Bible.
