'The Church Baby' -- May 14, 2023

Mr. David and Mrs. Rebecca Cowan enjoyed Morgan Shelby Grace Cowan’s one-year-old birthday party at Fleming Hall (Faith Temple’s fellowship building), Taylors, SC, at 4:00 p.m., Sat., May 6, 2023. Morgan’s birthday was May 9.

Morgan was nicknamed “Ruby” because of her red hair and a family trip to Ruby Falls before her birth.

“Ruby was hoped-for and planned-for,” Rebecca says. “Jennifer Bittle, David’s sister, wanted us to have another baby. People were praying. The hardest thing for me was having to relearn how to do things again. She’s only slept through the night twice in her little life. It’s been interesting. I’m glad she’s here. She’s healthy. That’s a blessing.”

Ruby’s older sister, Sage, 11-and-a-half years old, and their grandmother, Ms. Teran Bagwell, enjoyed the birthday party, along with a crowd (mostly Faith Temple folk) who gathered around “The Church Baby.”

“Sage was that way too,” Rebecca says, noting that Sage was the center of attention when she was a baby in a church with few youngsters. “We’ve grown up with the people of Faith Temple. We love the family atmosphere.”

Rebecca, Ruby, and Ms. Teran (Rebecca’s mother) usually go out for breakfast two days each week. On Mother’s Day, David and Rebecca plan to order food and eat at their home with her mother and the children.

David Cowan and Rebecca Bagwell began dating in 1998. They were Blue Ridge High School students. David, then a football team member, also ran cross-country on the school track team.

“His best friend and I were friends,” Rebecca says. “David and I met at lunch.”

Invited by friends, they visited Faith Temple’s youth group, then headed by the late Youth Pastor Jonathan White. Neither David nor Rebecca had much church background.

“I wasn’t raised in church; neither was David,” Rebeca says.

David accepted Christ first.

“I wasn’t ready,” Rebecca says.

She accepted the Lord a few weeks later.

Rebecca graduated in 2000; David finished in 2001. She worked as a checkout clerk at the Taylors Bi-Lo (now closed). David bagged groceries at that store. They were married at Faith Temple on Aug. 7, 2004.

Rebecca was working at Faith Printing Company (FPC) when “Sage came along.” She quit her job but returned to FPC later to work at stuffing envelopes, folding printing forms, etc. Ms. Juanita Barnett was instrumental in landing an FPC job for Rebecca. Before Rebecca gave birth to Ruby, she was working in the Mountain View Elementary School cafeteria. She hopes to wait until Ruby is in K-4 before returning to work outside her home.

David worked at Cherrydale Elementary School as a custodian, and now works as the plant engineer at Lake Forest Elementary School in Greenville. He still runs long distances and participates in 5K race events. Sage has started running, too.

“I hope mothers have a happy and blessed day, as they should,” Rebecca says about Mother’s Day 2023.
