Fathers Should Lead Families

HOW THEY SAW IT:

James Boswell (1740-1795) was the 9th Laird (“person who owns a large estate”) of Auchinleck. A Scottish writer and lawyer, he was born in Edinburgh. He’s known for his biography of the English writer Samuel Johnson. That book is said to be the greatest biography written in the English language. 

Boswell often referred to a childhood day when his father took him fishing. He many times mentioned things his father taught him during their trip together. 

After often hearing about that excursion, someone checked Boswell’s father’s journal, to see what the father said about that trip. Turning to the date, the reader found only one sentence entered: “Gone fishing today with my son; a day wasted.” — (From “750 Engaging Illustrations” by Craig Larson)

FROM THE BIBLE (ESV):

Psalm 103:13: “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.”

Luke 15:20: “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.”

CHRISTIAN PARENTS:

“The main goal for Christian parents should be to guide their children to a saving faith in Christ and to set them on a path to maturity, bringing them to the full measure of his glory (Ephesians 4:13),” according to gotquestions.org. 

The Bible says the father is to be head of his household and lead his wife and children to God, making sure Jesus is most important in his home. A father should teach his children what is right and wrong. 

The greatest commandment in Scripture is this: “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5). In Deut. 6:2, we read, “So that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.” In Deut. 6:6-7, we read, “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

Mrs. Diane Ebert   On Mother’s Day 2025, Sun., May 11, Mrs. Diane Ebert honored Mrs. Tweedie Few, her deceased mother. Diane’s sister Sally and Diane’s daughter Chelsea were present. Diane thanked Mrs. Sarah Lell, Tweedie’s sister, for “stepping right in where my mother left off… I thank God I had a godly mother,” Diane said. “She never wavered from her beliefs… always there for us… She did her best to raise us right… She may not have been perfect, but she was perfect for me. I will always love her and miss her.”  Mrs. Sandra Martin   Mrs. Sandra Martin’s late mother, Mrs. Frances Truett Long, was born in 1937 near Sumter, SC. Born next to last, with 6 bros. and 3 sisters, she picked cotton. She was saved under the Rev. Denny Long and married him when she was 16 in 1954 (wed for 68 years). Rev.
